Continuous cast product is a semi-finished metal product created by continuous mould casting in a mould, and is further processed as a solid or hollow profile.
Product forms: solid and hollow castings
Continuous casting delivers symmetrically and asymmetrically shaped solid and hollow castings. Depending on the withdrawal direction of the installation, a distinction is made between vertical and horizontal continuous casting.[1]
Materials
Continuous cast product is used for steel, aluminium and copper.[2]
Semi-finished product and further processing
As a semi-finished product, continuous cast product forms the precursor to the finished product; for steel, DIN EN 10079 defines the terms for this product stage.[3] Sheets, bars, tubes and profiles are produced from the semi-finished product by rolling or forging.
Distinction from sand casting
Continuous cast product is created in the mould, a reusable permanent mould made of graphite or a metallic material.[4] Sand casting, by contrast, requires its own mould for every casting, see the “See also” section.
