Continuous casting is the continuous casting process used to produce continuous cast product: liquid metal solidifies in a cooled mould into an endless strand and is continuously withdrawn.
Mould and cooling
The liquid metal is poured into a short, intensively cooled mould.[1] Primary cooling in the mould area forms a stable outer shell of the strand; secondary cooling follows outside the mould.[1]
Withdrawal
As liquid metal continues to flow in, already-solidified metal is withdrawn from the mould. This produces an endless strand, which is subsequently cut to length.[1]
Variants: horizontal and vertical
Continuous casting installations are distinguished as vertical or horizontal by their design.[1]
