This composition gives the material its characteristic hardness and brittleness. Compared with steel, cast iron is less ductile, meaning it can fracture more easily, but it offers excellent compressive strength. It also has good thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance, which is why it is often used in engine and machine components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applications of cast iron<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of its robust properties, cast iron is used in a wide range of applications. In construction, it is commonly used for pipes and plumbing fittings. In the automotive industry, engine parts and brake discs are made from cast iron because it withstands high temperatures. Cast iron is also popular for cookware such as pans and pots, since it distributes heat evenly and is long-lasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Production and processing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the foundry, cast iron is melted in a cupola furnace or in an induction furnace; induction melting accounts for around 40% of global cast iron production. A blast furnace, by contrast, produces pig iron from ore and is located at the ironworks, not at the foundry. After melting, the liquid cast iron is poured into moulds, where it cools and takes its final shape. Depending on the intended application, the properties of the cast iron can be further modified through heat treatment or by adding other alloying elements. This flexibility makes cast iron a versatile material in industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of cast iron<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cast iron is distinguished by the form its graphite takes. The main forms are lamellar (flake) graphite, nodular graphite and vermicular graphite. The break surface further distinguishes grey and white cast iron.
